The Dingle Whiskey Bar at Fraunces Tavern is a great place to sit by the fire with friends and take in some history while enjoying a dram. It is a stop on both the American Whiskey Trail and the New York Freedom Trail.

Fraunces Tavern is a delectable trip through history. Reputed to be the oldest surviving building in Manhattan, this is where George Washington gave his farewell address to the officers of the Continental Army in 1783. The colonial decor throughout the establishment makes you feel like you are back in 18th century.
The Dingle Whiskey Bar is the smaller of two bars inside the Tavern. It is small and cozy with space at the bar for 6-8 patrons and arm chairs near a fire place which can accommodate another 8 people. A glass case behind the bar showcases some of the higher end of their brown booze collection, with bottles spilling over into shelves in the windows behind the bar as well as in two glass hutches in the lounge area. In other words, there is whiskey and whisky everywhere.
Fire! Place! |
The fireplace and candle lit tables and bar provide the perfect atmosphere to really take in the dram of your choice. During my visit, there was light jazz playing at just the right volume to not overpower conversations. They also host live music occasionally (such as an Irish band on Sunday afternoons).
Don't be afraid to bring your non-whiskey drinking friends along. The Tavern is also home to Porterhouse Brewing Company and has good selection of other drafts, cans, and bottles as well. If you're in the mood for a cocktail, order up something classic or something of their list of signature whiskey cocktails. Be sure to also check out the museum upstairs.
Note: this Bar Brief does not have a recommend rating or reviewer quotes as only one member of the Weekly Whisky visited.
