Bar Brief: Waterfront Ale House

Waterfront Ale House is a mainstay of the Kips Bay area, promising its patrons "Warm Beer, Lousy Food, Ugly Owner." We ventured inside to see if they made good on their tag line.

  • Location: Kips Bay, Manhattan
  • Designation: ale house / gastropub
  • Whisky selection: >50 well cultivated with a lot of Canadian
  • Prices: low for Manhattan
This is either a very large glass or some whisky has been consumed, because the pour was like 3 oz to begin with.
From it's sarcastic motto to its classic, dive-bar motif, Waterfront Ale House is a harkening back to a time when Manhattan was a place for the homegrown, rather than the transient. Nowadays it sits just south of a Loews Movie Theater and shopping center, yet the vibe once you walk in screams the New York City of yesteryear. There's a classic rock soundtrack, free popcorn at the bar and tables, a quick witted but warm barkeep, and prices that in today's Manhattan seem more than reasonable (some might almost say "cheap").

The bar.
With a solid assortment of all kinds spirits, and even some of their own home concoctions (Granny's Apple-Pie Vodka is NO JOKE), you'd be content to just relax an evening away with some light conversation and a calm atmosphere in which to do so. But Waterfront Ale House is not content to leave you with just a drink, boasting a diverse menu with offerings like Elk Burgers and Oyster Po'Boys, as well as live Blues on the weekend in case you'd like to let loose a bit. Overall, Waterfront Ale House reminds us all of the New York City we now look back on fondly, and offers a chance to travel back in time, if only for a dram.

Rating: recommend x3.
"Good menu, good pours, good staff. This place makes me wish I could've been there before the rest of the borough went downhill."  - Evan
"Fun place... not quite a dive bar but not exactly a first-date kind of place. Who doesn't love a popcorn machine? - Greg
"THAT 3 oz POUR THO."  - Quinn
